For those of us in the northern hemisphere, it's going to be cold soon. Who has good tips for shoring up things around the home to reduce the strain on utilities in the winter time? Here's some things I've read about, but wondering what else people here have heard of...

    • Keeping the thermostat a little lower inside and just keeping a layer on or being under a blanket to save. If you have something that can be programmed, you can set it to be off when you're away during the day and to come on just before you get home.
    • Sealing off unused rooms- make sure you close off heating vents and keep doors closed so as not to waste energy.
    • If you decorate, use LED light strips instead of older ones.
    • Shop for energy efficient bulbs, or appliances if you need to replace something (these usually cost more)
    • Replacing heating filters.
    • Don't forget to unplug appliances when they aren't in use if you can as this will save a little on energy as well.
