  1. I have a friend who is on a very low income, only recently her mother passed away and had no savings, assets or estates. My friend is finding it difficult to deal with everything and the financial costs are also mounting. Are there any charities that help with funeral costs? I promised her that I would look into it and explain. I'm not the best at doing research and I have a million other things to do and I heard that this forum was quite helpful. Anyway I live in Illinois and would be grateful for any suggestions, I am estimating that the cost will probably go to $2000 so any help that is available will be grateful! Please help!!

Sorry to hear about your friend, I hope everything gets better soon. If your friend is on benefits then she could apply for funeral assistance, you can do a quick search on USA.Gov to find out more for the State of Illinois. You might need to fill some forms out but I hear they process the payment really quickly.

Here is the link to funeral assistance in the state of Illinois. The program pays for funeral and burial expenses when the persons resources are below DHS standard payment rates. If your friends mother was receiving a number of benefits from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or AABD Family Assist then they should be able to get money (Check the link for full details on who qualifies)

You can download the Funeral or Burial Claim form, or Funeral & Burial Reimbursement claim form. You can get $1103 for a funeral and $552 for a burial. Good Luck.

  4. Thanks for the link, it was so useful. I have downloaded all the forms and printed them off. We was able to get a friend who would pay so now we can have the money reimbursed, the good news is that the deceased was on benefits and was eligible for funeral assistance. Thanks for all the help.
