Can I sell my business idea without a patent? For the last 3 months I have had a business idea I just can't get out of my head. I have created a business plan and from the extensive market research done I believe the business will be profitable. I have created a business pitch and was ready to go in front of investors and venture capitalists. After careful consideration I decided that running a full time business and building it from scratch will be too much effort and I don't have enough time to make it a real success due to family commitments. I was thinking about selling my business idea but I don't have a patent, if anyone has any ideas or strategy/resources on selling business ideas please let me know.

You can sell a business idea without a patent but you nee to be careful who you do business with. If you really believe that the idea will become the next best thing having a patent will give you more power when you negotiate a price for your idea. Do a quick search online to see if your idea is already available. If its not you can apply for a patent and give your idea a patent pending status.

Once you've sorted out your patent status the best way to sell your idea is to identify the big companies who will be interested in the idea. You need to compile a list of at least 10 different big reputable companies. Once you've identified the big companies that might be interested in the idea you need to contact the research and development department and ask to meet with someone.

You should work on a pitch and get the company to sign a non-disclosure form just in case they pinch your idea. Once all this is done you can present your idea and hope they will like it. This is the simplest and most effective way to sell an idea. Getting third party companies involved only prolongs the process and there is no guarantee of success. Hope this helps. The video below explains how to sell your business idea by creating an effective pitch.
