Home mortgage government assistance program

I'm struggling to pay my mortgage and was thinking of asking for help, are there any home mortgage Government assistance programs which could help me? I am paying a high interest and having this modified to a lower interest would help save me hundreds of dollars. Also I wanted to know if the home mortgage assistance programs help homeowners with repayments, I am on a low income and bought my house when banks were giving away mortgages to anyone without checking their backgrounds. I don't want to lose my job but it is getting harder and harder to meet the mortgage obligations, please help.
