I wanted to share an expected source of income which I stumbled across in 2013. I actually made over £1000 so far this year by complaining on service received or unsatisfactory products that did not meet my expectations. There might be some who say making money from complaining is unethical however if I pay for a product or service and it does not meet the required standard then everyone has a right to complain.

My first complaint was back in January when my heating broke down, I had boiler insurance with HomeServe who offered parts and labor for £23 per month. I had paid 3 months in premium money when my boiler broke down and I was without heating or hot water. It took 17 days, 5 visits, and 13 calls to get the heating and hot water sorted. I was very dissatisfied with the level of service I received and decided to email the CEO for answers. After expressing my dissatisfaction a full investigation was underway and within 14 days the complaints department upheld my complaint and I was awarded £250.00. The same problem occurred just recently and I was without hot water and heating for 14 days, after following the same procedure of complaining direct to the CEO I was eventually awarded £275.00.

Another service that I use to save time is having my groceries delivered to my home. I can pick all the items online and then have them delivered at my convenience. When the items are not available you get the choice of having them replaced with another suitable product, you can also decide not to have any replacement if it's not available. On several occasions Tesco Online Grocery sent me replacement items when I specifically requested that I did not want the alternative. There might have been a glitch in the system which caused this. Every time this happened I emailed the complaints department and informed them and I was awarded a £5 to £10 voucher for future shopping with the company. In total I received £100 from just writing a few emails that took 5 minutes each.

My largest award came from complaining to my mortgage company Santander. The mortgage company increased it's standard variable rate from 2.99% to 4.74%. when I first took out my mortgage there was a cap on how much the SVR could increase by, this rate was capped at 4.5%. Because Santander was in breach on contract I was awarded all the over payments that I made including £400 compensation for their error.

If you think that you're being treated unfairly then don't hesitate to complain. Find the email address for the complaints department and then try to get the contact details of the CEO and copy them in to add weight to your complaint. Justify why you're complaining and then ask them for a resolution and compensation for the amount of time you've wasted.

If you've got any examples of where you've complained and were compensated please leave a comment below.

Well done extracting money from your mortgage company, I read about the blunder here. It's always nice to get one over your mortgage provider.

I just read the post and I'm definitely insuring my boiler this winter. It breaks down most winters and I have to get it repaired. I suppose insuring it a few months before winter makes sense. If it does break down and takes time to repair I'll certainly be complaining. Thanks for information, every little helps.

It's always a good idea to insure your heating system. If you think about it a new system could cost 5 times what you pay for in yearly premium. What this means is that if you're system doesn't break down in five years your losing money. I like to keep it insured because it gives me peace of mind.
