Should I Buy or Should a Rent a House?

    After reading lots of material online I'm still confused as to whether I need to rent or buy a home to save money. At the moment I'm renting a bedroom home for $500, I feel like I'm losing $500 every month and it's just going down the drain. On the other hand I have $50,000 in savings which I could use towards a deposit, any mortgage payment I make could count towards the principal which means all the money would not be wasted. Seriously I'm confused, please help! Any ideas would be appreciated. I started a poll too, so please vote.
