What happens to unpaid medical bills?

I wanted to know what happens to unpaid medical bills. At the moment I have a lot of hospital and medical bills outstanding. I am making payments but its unrealistic to continue because I'm borrowing money at higher interest to pay off the bills. I wanted to stop making payments and therefore wanted to know what happens to unpaid medical bills. Will I have this recorded on my credit file?
