    I'm getting behind with my electric bills and my gas bills. I'm on a really low income and I'm a single parent with four children. I am really struggling at the moment and wanted to know where I could go if I needed help with my utility bills. I am near the federal poverty line and I am the only person in my family with an income. After food and rent I really don't have much to pay my utility bills. We have been living frugally for a while and avoiding any assistance but it's come to a point where every day is becoming a struggle. I will be revisiting this thread on a daily basis and would appreciate any help.

    Have you heard of the LIHEAP Program that's offered by the Government? It's actual name is the low income home energy assistance program and helps you financially if you can't pay your energy bills, if you're a needy family or on a very low income you could be eligible for the following

    1. Bill payment help
    2. Energy crisis help
    3. Weatherization and energy related home repairs

    If you want to apply for your program then you need to find the state or territory that runs the program, this is also available to Indian tribe or tribunal organization agencies. You can all 1-866-NRG-NEAR or 1-866-674-6327 to find the nearest office in your state. You can search by going to Liheap State and Territory Contact Listings.

    Also in the meantime you could check out the Weatherization Assistance Program to help insulate your home or the Energy Efficiency Tips to Save Energy. Hope this helps. Here is a video which explains everything in more detail.

    I'm sorry to hear about your hardship, have you tried the programs being offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development? They have energy assistance programs, community action partnerships, and other helpful links. The link attached above is for Idaho but you can search for your own State. I hope everything works out.

    I've had problems with energy bills in the past and I really feel for you, I was doing some research on the internet and found a site called Adoption Services, it's a home energy assistance program that helps pay winter bills and summer cooling bills, here are the contact details. I could only find information on Alabama but you could probably do your own search for the State you live in.

    Some of the suggestions that have been made here are great, I would also look into a site called Utility Bill Assistance, it shows all the energy assistance programs from the public and private sector. You can get information on Energy Assistance Programs, LIHEAP Assistance, Home Energy Audit, Water Sense Programs and loans to help with utility bills. The link above is for Arizona however you could do a search for your own state.

    Have your tried calling the energy companies? If you're struggling with your payments you could ask to be put on their hardship tariff which is significantly cheaper. You could also ask to be put on a payment plan so you pay an affordable amount every month. Going forward you need to cut down on your energy usage. Simple switches such as Energy Saving Light bulbs and turning the thermostat down could lead to significant savings. You could also disconnect all non-essential items and only use electricity and gas for essential living.
